God Eater, Namco Bandai's take on the portable monster-hunting genre that's grown to be one of the Japan gaming industry's biggest trends as of late, is getting an official sequel.

The new title, God Eater 2, is the follow-up to the first title, which (along with its expansion pack, released in the US under the name Gods Eater Burst) sold over 1.1 million copies worldwide -- not bad for a brand-new franchise debuting on the PSP. "Burst was the result of us taking in all the feedback we received from gamers about the original GE and trying to make the first game as complete a package as possible," producer Yusuke Tomizawa told Famitsu magazine in this week's issue. "With GE2, we're trying to pinpoint what users found fun about the game; we're taking it apart and reassembling it from scratch."

The sequel, set three years after the original title, will feature the same fast-paced hunting action as before. Two new weapons -- the Boost Hammer and Charge Spear -- were revealed in Famitsu, and a new "Engage System" allows players to share weapon-oriented gauges in multiplayer mode, allowing for more options in team battle. "The GE series is about high-speed action and a story that makes you the hero," Tomizawa said. "The way those two aspects combine is what I think makes the game appealing to users, and to start out, we're going to make both aspects stronger in GE2."
